The Stanford-O’Connor Family Medicine Residency Program’s Advocacy and Community Engagement (ACE) Committee is a resident-led committee that strives to foster connections between our program and the historically marginalized and underserved groups within our local San Jose communities. As we recognize that structural policies drive health disparities, we are committed to using our platform as physicians to advocate on behalf of policies that improve health equity, directly working to improve our patients’ well-being and the health of their communities.

The ACE committee will promote a culture that is not only tolerant, but also anti-racist, inclusive, supportive, and active. The ACE committee aims to make promoting social justice and health equity in San Jose easier, accessible, and a part of our fundamental role as physicians.

This committee will achieve these aims by:

  • Collaborating with the Health Equity faculty committee to create an educational curriculum focused on the social determinants of health specifically affecting our local community

  • Coordinating resident and faculty participation in community activities and events, including marches, protests, grassroots efforts, and cultural celebrations

  • Advocating at a City, County, State, and Federal level for policies that directly and indirectly improve the health of our patients

  • Establishing and maintaining partnerships with local non-profit advocacy and community organizations to collaborate on projects and educational opportunities

Lastly, as our communities' needs change, the ACE committee will continue to grow, evolve, and adapt the aforementioned goals to our local communities' response and feedback.
