We provide a four-week Family Medicine elective for interested fourth-year medical students. Interested applicants should apply through Stanford School of Medicine: https://med.stanford.edu/clerkships.html.

We are excited to participate in Stanford's SCORE program as part of our residency's DEI efforts. SCORE recognizes that Stanford Medicine’s ideal of true community engagement is unlikely to occur without a workforce that is diverse in many ways. This includes individuals who are underrepresented in medicine, socially, economically, or educationally disadvantaged, and others whose backgrounds and experiences would diversify their clinical fields. If you are from one of these diverse backgrounds, consider applying for a sub-internship through SCORE, which includes a stipend and other resources such as mentorship. More details can be found at the link above.

Students are selected for a unique sub-internship that combines two weeks of inpatient adult medicine at O'Connor Hospital with two weeks of outpatient family medicine in a variety of community settings including the residency continuity clinic (the Family Medicine Center, part of the Indian Health Center) and one-on-one clinics in our faculty continuity clinic (Family Medicine Associates of San Jose, part of Stanford Health Care). All experiences include participation in resident didactics, behavioral medicine conferences, journal clubs, case conferences, and resident-led chalk talks.

The elective rotation is open to up to four students per block. Two slots are reserved for Stanford students, and two slots are open to fourth year students in good standing at accredited allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. Occasionally, one slot (outpatient family medicine component only) is filled by a third year Stanford medical student on his or her Family Medicine core clerkship rotation.

The elective rotation is not a prerequisite for acceptance into the residency program, nor does it guarantee an interview during the residency application period. It is recommended for any student who would like to have more exposure to family medicine in a community setting.
